The ESRC Census Programme
Census.ac.uk, home of the ESRC Census Programme, provides services to allow users in UK higher and further
education institutions to access data from the 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001 UK censuses.
The Programme services have been funded from 2006-11 by the
Economic and Social Research Council
(ESRC) with additional support from the
Joint Information Systems Committee
(JISC) and encompass data acquisition and specialist data support units. The new round of the Programme which
commenced on 1 August 2006 includes further development of the access arrangements of the Programme web site and a
round of research and development projects, for which a call is currently underway.
The Programme is delivered by a number of units, each with its own area of data expertise.

at the University of Leeds and the University of St Andrews supports the migration and travel-to-work statistics.

at the University of Manchester supports the Samples of Anonymised Records.

Centre for Longitudinal Study Information and User Support
at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine supports the ONS Longitudinal Study for England and Wales.

Longitudinal Studies Centre - Scotland
at the University of St Andrews and the General Register Office for Scotland, supports the Scottish Longitudinal
Study and became part of the ESRC Census Programme on 1 August 2006.

Northern Ireland Longitudinal Study Research Support Unit
at the Centre for Public Health, Queen’s University, Belfast supports the Northern Ireland Longitudinal Study
and became part of the ESRC programme in April 2009.

Anyone wishing to use the area statistics, digitised boundaries, interaction data or samples of anonymised
records, should
register
through Census.ac.uk. The census services team based in the
UK Data Archive
at the University of Essex, manages registration and is also responsible for the programme web site.
