Looking “Beyond 2011”, 21 October 2011 at the Royal Statistical Society, London
To date, the decennial census has been at the heart of the population statistics system, providing
a definitive re-basing of mid-year population estimates and unique crosstabulations of socioeconomic
and geographical detail. However, the task of census enumeration is becoming increasingly challenging,
and the UK Statistics Authority therefore set up the Beyond 2011 project to examine models for meeting
future user needs for census type data. This meeting represents a first opportunity for a broad
community of users and stakeholders to hear about the Beyond 2011 programme and the initial work
being undertaken by ONS. Perspectives will then be received from academic, central and local
government and business, allowing plenty of time for questions and discussion and explaining how to
get involved in the debate.
