2001 Census Digital Boundary Data Available from Casweb
The CDU's
Casweb service
has been enhanced to provide users with digital boundary data to accompany 2001 census data downloads in a
range of standard GIS formats ready for mapping and spatial analysis. This development significantly
simplifies and speeds up the process of producing maps and performing GIS-based spatial analyses using 2001
census data by removing the previous requirement to access the two kinds of data from separate sources
and perform joins between them.
The Digital Boundary Data is available in ESRI Shape, MapInfo Tab and Mid/Mif and also GML formats. Other
formats may also be released if there is a user requirement for them.
The full news release may be viewed at
2001 Census Boundary Data.
The CDU is one of the units of the
ESRC Census Programme,
and is based within
Mimas
at the University of Manchester. It provides access to the aggregate statistics outputs from recent
censuses via its Casweb application, as well as support for their use, free of charge to members of UK
Higher and Further Education institutions. It also provides a range of census-related services and
datasets, such as the GeoConvert geographical matching and data conversion tool, and Experian demographic
information, and has a role in championing the requirements of the academic community within the census
process.
