Postcode Directories (including GeoConvert) End User Licence Special Conditions
You (the End User) and the Data Team agree that in relation to the data collection set out below:
- the Data Team consists of:
- Census Dissemination Unit, Mimas (University of Manchester) and/or Census Geography Data Unit (UKBORDERS), EDINA (University of Edinburgh), the data service providers;
- Economic and Social Research Council, the service funder;
- Ordnance Survey and Office for National Statistics, the data collection funders;
- Ordnance Survey and Office for National Statistics, the original data creators;
- Office for National Statistics, the data depositor;
- The Census Registration Service (University of Essex), the registrar; and
- the following additional conditions of use apply:
- Copyright notices which must be used by the End User
The End User will ensure that the following statement appears in a prominent position each time the Data is published by the End User:

Where it may not be practical to use the full statement where there is limited space, such as maps, the first two lines of the copyright statement can be used instead.
- Restrictions on the use of the Data by the End User
The End User will only use the Data for Internal Business Use. “Internal Business Use” means use in
educational and research purposes and any purpose associated with educational administration;
it expressly excludes Commercial Use and the benefits derived from such use must not constitute
a Financial Gain, other than funding for not-for-profit research awards. “Commercial Use” means
any purposes which seek to exploit the data for Financial Gain or any purpose which is or is
likely to place the use of the data in competition with a third party who is seeking to exploit
the licenced data. “Financial Gain” means a benefit accruing where the licensee or any third
party used by, or connected to, the licensee receives any revenue or financial credit when
using the data. Commercial use (or any other use which falls outside the definition of
Internal Business Use) will require further direct discussion with ONS and for a further
licence to be obtained from Ordnance Survey.
Termination of the End User’s rights to use the Data
Where the End User licence is terminated for any reason or where the ESRC’s rights to distribute and sublicense the Data for any reason are terminated the End User will:
- immediately cease using the Data supplied to them; and
- delete all copies of the Data they hold PROVIDED ALWAYS that where prior to the date of termination the Data has been incorporated into academic research, papers or publications or into material submitted for any degree or other qualification or examination by the End User then for the avoidance of doubt such use can continue.
Capitalised terms not defined in these Special Conditions are defined in your End User Licence.
DATA COLLECTION
These Special Conditions are applicable to the following data products (together the ‘data collection’):
Postcode Directories.

learning, teaching and research. It is best known for providing the JANET network, a range of support, content and
